Last years winner of the anotherF1podcast’s fantasy league was David Keay. Not only did he win our league he came 5th overall in the ITV competition.
His inclusion in our league meant the league finished in the top 100 (32nd to be exact). To put things in perspective Kevin finished 15897th beating Terry who limped in at 15905th (in your face Saunders). With that in mind we asked him if he would share his secrets, to our shock and delight he agreed.
In the run up to the start of the season we will be sharing this knowledge with you, but first we asked him to explain his no doubt long and exhaustive history in fantasy F1 games. The answer shocked and dismayed us both.
In truth I’d never played fantasy anything till last year, it was my first experiment. Bit of a challenge as for 2 months of the season I was homeless and sleeping at friends, and often without internet access.
I won the budget balancing Fantasy-F1.net with a race to spare. (And my 2nd and 3rd teams were both top 50)
ITV’s fantasy game was much more about racers, and I could and should have won it by a wide margin, but their software fucked up, denying me my planned constructors changes (from McLaren to Ferrari and from BMW to Renault) before Singapore. I cried foul, they shrugged and said, yeah, it does that.
Disappointment caused me to take my eye of the ball in Japan, and I slipped to 7th when thinking clearly I could have held 2nd. But 3rd place should still have been mine, till another software fuck up cost me a few points and I trailed home a sorry 5th and out of the prizes. This time I emailed ITV the sort of abuse I’d normally reserve for Steve Ryder.
Still not bad for a first attempt out of 80,000 odd teams. I made my mistakes, not least picking Nick Heidfeld for every race except the two he finished on the podium… but it was a good fight.
If you’re wondering:
(The first software error was having my teams open in separate tabs, I changed the constructors of my C team early in the season… only to find it had also changed the constructors of my A team. So I then had to change them back and thus both changes were lost. Tech support refused to return the changes and just said, “Don’t use tabbed browsing.”
I didn’t… so was surprised to find my podium etc. picks for the last race all magically changed again. Maybe I shouldn’t have called them Lotus Lotus2 and Lotus 3… must have got confused)
So it turns out David is to fantasy F1 what Lewis Hamilton could only dream of being to our beloved sport.
