Inspiration for Renault’s new exhaust revealed

by Terry Saunders on 2/02/2011

anotherf1podcast can exclusively reveal the path of innovation that led to the radical new exhaust on Renault’s 2011 F1 car.

Although they are trying to keep it secret, the design was actually first mooted by exiled smoker Pat Symonds who had been found to be working on the idea in the immediate aftermath of the crash-gate hearing.

Aware that he and Flav were likely to be booted from the sport, he’d decided to go out on a high and was drawing up plans for what he called “The Last Push”.

Alas, he was rushed from his office, unable to pick up his things and the drawings remained on his design desk, to be found by new owners Dani Behr and Eric Bristow.

Symonds’ designs featured his home car, with an elaborate series of piping redirecting the exhaust fumes from the pipe on the tailgate to an opening in the drivers side window. Markings were led to signify that this was to be used “in a closed garage.”

Original Renault exhaust idea

It’s unknown if he has managed to perfect the design, but also it’s interesting to note that McLaren are rumoured to be debuting a similar idea this week, theirs developed in the aftermath of their FIA scandal.
